Our products, including Sta Clear Liquid Chlorinator, Boxed Acid, Sta Clear Balancers, and other pool and industrial chemicals, require careful handling to ensure the safety of operators, the environment, and end users. Below are general safety guidelines and handling instructions for our range of products.

Hazard Classification

Many Sentry products, such as Sta Clear Liquid Chlorinator (sodium hypochlorite bleach), are classified as hazardous materials due to high pH and corrosive properties. These materials require specific handling, storage, and transportation protocols to maintain safety.

Protective Equipment

To ensure the safe handling of Sentry Industries’ products, operators must wear the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This is crucial for protecting against chemical exposure, which can pose serious health risks. Below is a detailed guide on the necessary PPE and recommendations for the best types available:

Eye Protection (Goggles)

Protect eyes from splashes, vapors, and direct exposure to hazardous chemicals. Use chemical splash goggles that provide a snug fit and indirect ventilation to prevent liquids from reaching the eyes. ANSI Z87.1-rated goggles are recommended for maximum protection. Goggles with anti-fog coating are also highly recommended to maintain clear visibility during extended use, ensuring that workers can perform tasks safely without impaired vision.

Skin Protection (Apron and Gloves)

Prevent skin contact with corrosive and hazardous materials, reducing the risk of burns and irritation. Use a chemical-resistant apron made from materials like neoprene or PVC that can withstand corrosive substances. Choose impermeable rubber or nitrile gloves specifically rated for chemical resistance. Check for EN374-rated gloves, which ensure protection against chemical risks.

Face Mask or Respirator

For most chemical handling tasks involving sodium hypochlorite and similar substances, a half-face respirator with P100 or multi-gas cartridges is recommended to filter out chemical vapors and particles. NIOSH-approved half-face respirators, such as the 3M 6000 series with replaceable P100 filters or multi-gas vapor cartridges, offer reliable protection.

Emergency First Aid Measures

If in Eyes: Hold eye open and rinse gently with water for 15-20 minutes. Remove contact lenses after the first 5 minutes, then continue rinsing. Seek medical advice immediately.
If on Skin or Clothing: Remove contaminated clothing and rinse skin immediately with water for 15-20 minutes. Contact a poison control center or doctor for further advice.
If Swallowed: Call poison control or a doctor immediately. Have the person sip water if able to swallow, but do not induce vomiting unless instructed. Avoid giving anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
If Inhaled: Move the person to fresh air immediately. If not breathing, call 911 and administer artificial respiration. Keep the product container with you when seeking treatment. Note: Probable mucosal damage may contraindicate the use of gastric lavage.

Environmental Hazards

Sentry products, especially sodium hypochlorite, can be toxic to aquatic life. Avoid discharging effluent containing these chemicals into bodies of water without proper permits. Consult with local authorities, the State Water Board, or the EPA for guidance on proper disposal. Always use these products in a well-ventilated area and never mix sodium hypochlorite with acid or ammonia compounds.

Spill Control

In the event of a spill:

Spilled materials should be pumped back into storage tanks or picked up by Sentry Industries for safe recycling.
Spills on the ground should be neutralized using sodium sulfite or sodium thiosulfate. Sentry Industries offers “Spill Magic” for this purpose.
